Selected Health First projects

This is a small selection of the projects that Health First is currently working on. For a more detailed breakdown please contact Graham Rushbrook. Please note that these pages do not provide an official description of the aims and objectives of the projects, they are for information only.

All projects are across Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham unless otherwise stated.

Black and Minority Health Initiative (BEMHI)

A programme of research which led to the development of health promotion programmes about coronary heart disease and associated illnesses which specifically target African and Caribbean communities in Lewisham.
Strategic priorities: mental health, older people, children and young people, sexual health, diabetes, cancers, coronary heart disease, health inequalities.

Breakfast club newsletters

One of the findings from an evaluation of breakfast clubs in Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham back in 2004 suggested that there was a need to share information and good practice between schools and childcare settings. Health First regularly produces newsletters which go out to all schools and children's centres in the three boroughs.

Caribbean Sexual Health Forum

A forum for people from Caribbean communities to discuss sexual health issues.
Strategic priorities: health inequalities, sexual health.

Children's Traffic Club

A proven, successful road safety programme for 3 and 4 year old children. Children were able to request a series of six illustrated road safety education activity books.
Strategic priorities: children and young people, health inequalities.

Coaching and short-term consultancy support on research and evaluation

Support for people involved in health promotion to increase knowledge of what evaluation is and how to carry it out to determine how effective their work is. Consultancy and coaching services were provided to do this.
Strategic priorities: generic support service addressing all priorities through improving quality of health promotion.

Community Sex and Relationships Programme

A project to produce an educational resource to promote sexual health among young people.
Strategic priorities: sexual health, mental health, children and young people, health inequalities.

Community Smoking Cessation Project

Project to reduce smoking among communities using selected community based settings in Southwark.
Strategic priorities: older people, cancers, coronary heart disease, health inequalities.

Health Advocacy Project

Development of a ten week course to provide people who speak fluent English and one other language spoken in London with the skills to become advocates to promote health in their communities.
Strategic priorities: health inequalities, coronary heart disease, mental health, diabetes, cancers.

Health Awareness / Open Days

A series of open days to raise awareness of health campaigns, support people wishing to deliver a health event at their workplace or in the community, and provide information about support services.
Strategic priorities: mental health, older people, children and young people, sexual health, diabetes, cancers, coronary heart disease, health inequalities.

Health First Learning Centre HeliCon Accreditation Pilot Site

The Health First Learning Centre participated in the development of a national quality standard for health libraries and was one of two pilot sites for the accreditation in London. It achieved the second highest level of accreditation.
Strategic priorities: the Learning Centre addresses all priorities through providing support and access to information for all those working in health promotion in Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham.

Health Promotion in Practice: Skills for Health Workers in the Community

A six day training course to enable understanding of health promotion theory, development of health promotion skills and networking between participants from other health promotion settings. Training course list.
Strategic priorities: All the priorities are addressed through learning about health promotion.

Increasing Up Take of MMR Vaccine

A programme to increase Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccine rates in Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham
Strategic priorities: children and young people.

KA24: Knowledge Access 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

Project to raise awareness of the KA24 facility - a selection of online bibliographic databases, journals and textbooks available to NHS staff in London - through training, coaching and publicity. Coaching course list. The project aimed to encourage and support evidence based practice.
Strategic priorities: All priorities addressed through encouragement of evidence based practice.

Lambeth and Southwark Modernisation Initiative - sexual health programme

Representatives from all sexual health services in Lambeth and Southwark work in partnership on this project to evaluate and improve sexual health services in those boroughs.
Strategic priorities: sexual health.

Lambeth sexual health network development and training support for GP practices

A project to examine what sexual health services GPs in Lambeth currently offer and supporting to develop their services through building a network of practitioners and offering training.
Strategic priorities: sexual health.

Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham African Health Forum

A long-standing forum for African communities which is committed to alleviating the health and social inequalities facing the African community.
Strategic priorities: all priorities are addressed, but the main focus is on health inequalities and sexual health.

Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham African Health Forum Small Grants Scheme Projects

Details of three examples of projects funded from the African Health Forum small grants scheme. The projects focus on HIV issues in African communities.
Strategic priorities: sexual health, children and young people, mental health.

Lewisham Food Strategy

Health First has worked closely with partners across the borough (Lewisham PCT, Lewisham hospital trust, Lewisham Council and the voluntary and community sector) to develop the Lewisham Food Strategy. Health First has encouraged a multi-agency approach to develop a strategy which addresses the determinants of a healthy diet. The strategy group meets regularly and works on 5 key areas - Food access, Food in schools, Food, nutrition and health, Food sustainability and Food Safety.

Lewisham Healthy Walks

A programme of walks developed to increase older people's opportunities to exercise, create volunteering opportunities (by recruiting a team of Walk Leaders) and promote the health benefits of walking. In Lewisham.
Strategic priorities: mental health, older people, diabetes, cancers, coronary heart disease, health inequalities.

Lewisham Neighbourhood Renewal Fund Wellbeing Mental Health Impact Assessment

Project to develop a screening tool to enable mental wellbeing projects to assess how well they are promoting young people's mental health in order to inform future development of services. In Lewisham.
Strategic priorities: mental health.

Lewisham Physical Activity Training Event

A one day event which aimed to encourage participants to increase their physical activity. Participants left the event with a directory of physical activity schemes within Lewisham.
Strategic priorities: mental health, older people, diabetes, cancers, coronary heart disease, health inequalities.

Lewisham Podiatry Health Promotion and Patient Education Training Day

A training course delivered to podiatrists working in Lewisham about health promotion and education methods in order to improve the quality of health education podiatrists deliver to their clients and so improve their clients' foot health care.
Strategic priorities: diabetes.

SHIBAH project

A study of sexual health issues affecting HIV positive Africans, and of their sexual health promotion and service delivery needs.
Strategic priorities: sexual health, health inequalities.

Small Grants Scheme

Funding for voluntary sector and community organisations to develop community based health promotion projects.
Strategic priorities: mental health, older people, children and young people, sexual health, diabetes, cancer, coronary heart disease, health inequalities.

Sorted Booklet

Project to develop a booklet about homophobia aimed at young people who are sexually attracted to people of the same gender as themselves.
Strategic priorities: mental health, children and young people, sexual health, health inequalities

Step-O-Meter Pilot Project

A trial of step-o-meters (small devices which measure how many steps a person walks the the distance they walk) in five health centres and GP practices in Lewisham. The project aimed to encourage people who do little exercise to become more active.
Strategic priorities: coronary heart disease, diabetes, cancers, mental health, older people.

Syphilis posters

Project to produce a series of posters to inform patients about the increase in syphilis infection and to give information about symptoms and treatment. In Lambeth and Southwark.
Strategic priorities: sexual health.
