Learning Sets

Health First offers a learning sets programme as an innovative way of addressing professional development needs.

The development of learning sets through Health First reflects our aim to create diverse environments in which learning can take place. Learning sets provide a flexible yet challenging response to identified learning needs.

What is a learning set?

A learning set is composed of individuals brought together to share information and resources, as well as to provide practical support around commonly agreed learning aims. Learning sets provide an arena that encourages the challenging of received wisdom and experimentation with new strategies and techniques.

Examples of learning sets that Health First have set up include three Evaluation and Research sets in Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham, a Pan-London Healthy Walks set and a Pan-London set focusing on research findings from an Education, Employment and Health Project.

How is it supported?

In the first instance a professional development advisor from Health First facilitates the learning set. Their role is to support the set in establishing common structures and learning objectives. As the set becomes more dynamic and self-directed the role of the professional development advisor becomes smaller.

How long does it last?

Learning sets are finite; once the aims of the set are met the group will decide if they want the set to continue or if they would like their learning to continue in other ways.

I'm interested, what do I do next?

If you would like to discuss the possibility of setting up a learning set on a particular topic, piece of research or piece of work please contact:
